How do I buy UK train tickets from overseas?

Moreton-in-Marsh station

This was a question recently asked by one of our super-organised customers who will be joining us on a tour in October, so I thought I would write a quick blog post in case it is helpful for others!

Many of our customers arrive to meet their Go Cotswolds tour by train – those coming from the London or Oxford direction usually meet us at Moreton-in-Marsh, while those coming from Coventry or Birmingham can meet us at Leamington Spa or Stratford-upon-Avon. (For more information on taking a train to meet a Go Cotswolds tour, please see our information page here.)

Like budget airline tickets, which get more expensive closer to the date of travel as availability decreases, you can often get cheaper train tickets if you book ahead of time. Some of our customers just like to be organised and have all of their travel planned in advance! But what do you do if you want to buy train tickets before you arrive in the UK?

As our passenger found, some ticket booking websites require you to have a UK address in order to buy tickets up front. However, it seems that the ticket booking agency Red Spotted Hanky will allow overseas customers to purchase tickets in their home country. There may be other agents that allow this, so let us know if you have any other suggestions!

A great thing about buying your train tickets online, whether you are in the UK or not, is that you don’t need to get the tickets mailed out to you before you travel. Instead, when you have completed the purchase of your tickets online, you will be given a booking code. When you arrive at your departure station on the day of travel, simply take this code to the ticket sales desk, or use one of the touch-screen ticket machines located around the station to collect your tickets.

Note: you must bring the credit/debit card you used to purchase the tickets as you will need to show this to the ticket seller, or insert it into the machine to retrieve your tickets. Don’t forget to bring this card with you on your holiday!

**If you are taking a train to meet your Go Cotswolds tour, we strongly recommend that you check the National Rail Enquiries website on the morning of your tour to check whether there are no delays or cancellations to your service.**
