5 reasons we love Moreton-in-Marsh (and you will too!)

Reasons we love Moreton in marsh picture of the train sign at the stationOne question we are asked a lot is, “Where should I stay in the Cotswolds?” It’s a great question, because with over 150 towns and villages across 800 square miles of Cotswolds countryside, the choice can be completely bewildering!

We often recommend staying in the market town of Moreton-in-Marsh – and here are 5 very good reasons why:

1. It’s super easy to reach, car-free

Moreton-in-Marsh is one of only a handful of Cotswold towns with a railway station. Even better: it has a direct train line from London Paddington (90 mins), Reading (1 hour) and Oxford (just 33 mins!)! So, if you’re visiting without a car, it really is one of the best places to stay because it’s so easy to get to and from.

2. There are wonderful places to stay and eatA picture of the Bell Inn in Moreton-in-Marsh

From luxury hotels to welcoming inns and plenty of Airbnbs, Moreton-in-Marsh has some of the best accommodation in the Cotswolds. Plus, there are excellent pubs and restaurants for relaxed evenings after a day exploring. All accommodation providers in Moreton-in-Marsh are within a short, easy walk of the railway station, too! Check out our website for our accommodation recommendations.

3. It’s a proper Cotswold town, not just a postcard stop

With its wide high street, classic Cotswold stone architecture, independent shops and cosy cafés, Moreton-in-Marsh feels lively and authentic. While it may lack a little of that ‘chocolate box’ charm often associated with the Cotswolds, it’s a real living, working town and brilliant place to wander, shop, enjoy a long lunch, and actually live the Cotswolds, not just photograph it.

4. There’s a historic Tuesday market

Markets have been permitted in Moreton-in-Marsh ever since King Henry III granted a royal market charter here in 1227. In 1638, Charles I issued another charter, and a market has been held in Moreton-in-Marsh every Tuesday ever since. Popular with locals and visitors, today’s market is a wonderful mix of local produce, crafts and curiosities.
